Investigations, disputes, and enforcement defense

Portrait of Jonathan Hale, Managing Partnercontact@aethercounsel.com

Jonathan leads the firm’s investigations and disputes practices. He started as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, where he tried fraud and money-laundering cases, and later built a securities-litigation practice at a national firm.

He moved into digital assets when client problems stopped fitting traditional financial-product templates: exchange failures, cross-chain thefts, and enforcement actions built on novel theories of who “offered” a token. He still tries cases. He also still reads the tracing work himself.

Clients hire him when a matter is already public, or is about to be — a hack, a Wells notice, a freezing order in another jurisdiction. He is admitted in New York and appears pro hac vice elsewhere with local counsel.

Representative work

  • Lead counsel on a cross-chain theft recovery that produced restraining orders against two centralized venues.
  • Defense of a trading firm through a multi-agency inquiry that closed without an enforcement action.
  • Trial counsel in a founder dispute over control of a protocol treasury.
